Some people realizes the existence of that and some don’t.
What is the plateau effect?
The plateau effect is defined as a force of nature that lessens the effectiveness of once effective measures over time. We plot a graph of particular activity verse time, there is increase over time at the beginning. After a while there is no increase or decrease, the graph line is a horizontal line. This means that particular activity is now stabilized and reached a “plateau”.
In everything we do, there is period of success followed by slump period of no progress. No matter whether we learn to play piano, try to lose weight, drinking, eating, taking medication, and so on, you can see the plateau effect in them. At this period of no progress, the advice you usually receive is “Just try harder. Just Do More”. According to the plateau effect, this is the worst advice that you can receive. The best advice is “Just stop doing it; but change it.”
What causes a plateau?
When you first start in the health and fitness journey, you begin to see results immediately. That’s because you are doing new things with your body that it isn’t used to. Your body accustoms to new environmental changes through acclimation or adaption. Once the process becomes routine, your body becomes numb to the thing which is constant. Now you are doing the same thing but the results are no longer there. It happens exactly as in Albert Einstein’s quote :
“Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”-Albert Einstein.
There are three processes working together for the healing of cancer, heart disease, infection, kidney, and etc. They are medical/treatment program, exercise program, and diet program. The plateau effect occurs in each area. You simple have to learn the secrets how to break through this healing plateau: exercise plateau, medical plateau, and diet plateau.
You have been going to the gym every day for years. You show up like clockwork. You have been on the same cardio machines, doing the same exercises, and lifting the same weights for the same amount of time, in the same exact order since day one. You’ve reached your exercise plateau when the result is not as good as the beginning of the process.
If you stay in this plateau stage for a long time, reversibility will be occurred. Reversibility occurs when initial improvement begins to deteriorate because the body has not experienced workouts challenging enough.
It is possible for you to overcome this exercise plateau with some small adjustments to your fitness strategies. Variety is the crucial element in overcome the exercise plateau. You can constantly switch exercise routine, change the intensity, or change duration. If you habitually run on the treadmill every morning, try running on an incline instead.
The damage of this exercise effect is only temporary and reversible.
Medication plateau occurs when your body fails to respond to same dosage of medication that has proven effective in the past. The effectiveness of the medication is decreased. To understand more, click on this link.
The result of the medical plateau effect can be found easily in our daily life.
I am sure you have noticed the bruises on the hands of some seniors or the oxygen tanks with some seniors. They are the results all long term treatments of chronic illnesses without taking the plateau effect seriously.
Let me explain how it happens with an example:
You visited your doctor for the heart problem. The doctor prescribed 30 mg in each pill. The drug performed so well on the first few days; but after that the effectiveness of the drug was decreasing (the plateau effect) because your body got use to the drug. When you told the doctor, the doctor prescribed higher dosage or stronger medication for you without knowing it was because of plateau effect. The exposure of higher dosage in long term causes the bursting of the tiny blood vessels.
The remedy is so simple by using “few-day rule” (it is unofficially named by me).
How does it work?
After the administration of prescription for a few days, you stop for one or two days (some may require the reduction of dosage in steps), and repeat the cycle.
Two things will happen here:
Any excess medication will be utilized completely. No toxicity of the medication will still be within the system.
The effectiveness of the medication will be restored to the level when the administration first began. You will be fine by using the initial amount of 30 mg per pill.
Unfortunately, the damage from medical plateau effect is permanent, non- reversible, and may be fatal one.
As you may not know, our daily habits of eating, drinking, other activities are also governed by plateau effect. Plateau effect appears in everything we do. If you don’t alternate the way we do things around this law, it may cause dangerous effect in your life.
If we want to avoid addiction to alcohol, coffee, and smoking, the few-day rule must be applied. Here is Deshawn Keiner’s story – she chased the feeling of initial high.
Something, which is good for you, will become harmful if “few-day rule” is not used to counteract the plateau effect. One example is the vitamins. Vitamins are essential for us so you take them daily. If you take them continuously, not only their effectiveness reduced over time but the accumulation of the excess is also harmful to your body.
Now you know that statement of “apple a day keeps doctor away” is only partially true.
You should rotate apple for a few days with oranges for a few days and repeat the cycles.
The healing plateau does exist in our life. In fact, the force of this plateau is as real as gravity.
The good news is that you can overcome this plateau.
In order to overcome the dreaded plateau, you must make a change “Now”.
